Shane became sombr via a makeshift recording studio in his bedroom.
The now 19-year-old Lower East Side native honed his talents at LaGuardia, New York’s esteemed public high school, spending his days studying classical music and late nights dabbling in young romance, skateboarding, and generally getting into trouble.
When COVID hit, his own music became an escape for the young artist from the physical and social isolation brought on by the pandemic. Sombr taught himself music production and immersed himself in obsessively recording emotional indie-rock anthems.
His breakout hit “Caroline” (2022) became a sad girl anthem, taking the internet by storm. “Caroline” was self-produced, self-written and self-released when sombr was just 16 and has since been streamed on Spotify over 40 million times.
Sombr has continued to drop EPs and singles ever since and is now streaming consistently over 1 million per day, approaching 6 million Spotify monthly listeners. His songs “would’ve been you,” “do I ever cross your mind” and his latest single “back to friends” have become indie-rock hits.
Sombr and Rachel Chinouriri (a 2025 Britt Nominee and direct support on Sabrina Carpenter’s upcoming tour) are releasing a remix / collab on February 7 of Rachel’s hit “All I Ever Asked.”
“I make music that is magical, at least to me, and I know it will find its way no matter what,” he details. “I just love art, and I actually need it to survive. As long as I can create and express myself, I am… happy… or at least not so sad.”
It’s the kind of trajectory that feels once in a generation. Between his remarkable aural instincts and an insatiability for experimenting with new sounds, sombr exudes staying power. This became more evident during his headline 2024 North American tour, of which Concert Chronicles stated, “sombr did not disappoint, delivering a performance that was both mesmerizing and electrifying” of his live show, with My Life In Sound adding, “If you have the chance to see sombr live, seize the opportunity – his performance is not to be missed.”
In 2025, sombr will follow up the successful headline dates with a month of shows in North America touring with Daniel Seavey (March 18 – April 19) and a month of shows in the UK/Europe opening for Nessa Barrett (May 16 – June 23).
Sombr is planning on releasing a project Summer 2025.
