The Bogie Band featuring Joe Russo

The Bogie Band featuring Joe Russo is a new collaboration between old friends. Bogie's fiery playing, composing and arranging meets Russo's dynamic and propulsive drumming. Joined by seven additional horn players and percussionists, it results in a riotous and joyful sound that pushes the boundaries of wind music.

Bogie has collaborated with artists such as Arcade Fire, TV On The Radio and Iron & Wine, though he's best known for his time as member/conductor of Antibalas. Russo's career has included performance and recording with Furthur, Gene Ween Band and Benevento/Russo Duo. He also leads his own group, the highly regarded Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (JRAD).

The players that round out the ten-piece ensemble are drawn from many of the top bands in NYC: The Dap-Kings, Red Barat, Budos Band, St. Vincent and David Byrne's American Utopia.

The Bogie Band featuring Joe Russo got its start playing downtown NYC music venue Nublu. Over a series of electrifying shows, word of their performances spread quickly and soon the collective was selling out In Summer 2021, they were invited to play Newport Jazz Festival. In a review of their performance, JazzTimes wrote, “…it was simply incredible. Mesmerizing waves of harmony and rhythm overlapped each other, like a mashup of Fela Kuti, Sun Ra, and King Crimson with (more) tuba! And (sometimes) multiple flutes.”

The Bogie Band’s debut album, The Prophet in the City, available March 25 from Royal Potato Family, begins with breath—the pulsing flute that creates a continuum through the whole piece from which the album takes its title. Realized in New York during the early days of the pandemic, breath itself takes on heightened importance. This music breathes like the city and through the city we feel the motion of the spirits.
