American music legend — and drummer for
the Band —
Levon Helm began putting on the often raucous
Midnight Rambles at his own home studio in a Woodstock, N.Y., barn a decade ago. Playing originals, covers, and hits from the Band’s
considerable catalog alongside the large
Midnight Ramble Band, Helm gained new fans at the sing-along gatherings. But despite his passing in 2012, and at Helm’s insistence to
“keep it goin’,” the show must go on. So the music continues with
Larry Campbell (vocals and guitar),
Amy Helm (vocals and mandolin),
Teresa Williams (vocals and guitar),
Brian Mitchell (vocals, keys and accordion),
Jim Weider (vocals and guitar),
Byron Isaacs (vocals and bass),
Shawn Pelton (drums),
Erik Lawrence (sax),
Jay Collins (sax) and
Steven Bernstein (trumpet) as the Midnight Ramble Band (below, performing “This Wheel’s on Fire” at the
Love for Levon benefit concert). And, with the addition of special guests
Marco Benevento and
Joe Russo, they leave Woodstock for Williamsburg to play the music of the Band on
Tuesday night at Brooklyn Bowl:
Brooklyn Is the Band.
