Pink Talking Fish and Kung Fu Bring the Heat to Brooklyn Bowl This Weekend
Posted On Wednesday, November 11th
Some band names are more revealing than others. But in the case of Pink Talking Fish (below, doing “You Enjoy Myself” > “On the Run” > “You Enjoy Myself”), it’s pretty straightforward: They more than capably cover Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, and Phish, discovering connections in the music along the way, like fitting Pink Floyd’s “On the Run” into the middle of Phish’s “You Enjoy Myself” or slipping the Vermont quartet’s “Sand” into Talking Heads’ “Slippery People.” While some cover bands are happy to just play songs people know, Pink Talking Fish bring something fresh and new to the music. See them on Friday night at Brooklyn Bowl.
When members of RAQ, Deep Banana Blackout, and the Breakfast — Adrian Tramontano (drums), Beau Sasser (keys), Chris DeAngelis (bass), Rob Somerville (sax), and Tim Palmieri (guitar) — first teamed up to form the funk-jazz-fusion band Kung Fu, no one knew how long it would last. But now six years and a couple of album later, it seems that Kung Fu (below, doing “Samurai”) are here to stay. Their second LP, Tsar Bomba (stream it below), came out last year. “Blurring the lines between electro-jazz-fusion and ’70s-style street-fighter funk, Tsar Bomba captures the band’s musical prowess with a delightful sense of creativity and musicianship,” according to Appalachian Jamwich. “The album showcases heavy-hitting guitar solos mixed with skilled saxophone interplay, mind melting electro-fused keyboards, a funky bass line and driving drums.” Catch their fiery live show on Saturday night at Brooklyn Bowl.
