Celebrate Halloween Early with Sun Ra Arkestra at Brooklyn Bowl on Thursday

American avant-garde jazz composer, bandleader, pianist, poet, and philosopher Herman Poole Blount was known across the world as the inimitable Sun Ra, “a self-declared angelic deity who fused early 20^th-century black consciousness with the myths and dreams of the ancient Egyptians.” And despite his death more than two decades ago, he’s left behind a considerable legacy of studio and live recordings—plus his acclaimed 25-piece orchestra, or Arkestra. Now led by multi-instrumentalist Marshall Allen, who joined Sun Ra in 1958 and remains a staunch defender of his legacy, the Sun Ra Arkestra (below, performing “Space Is the Place” at Berklee College of Music), decked out in space-age cosmic robes and sequined hats, continues to tour the world. And just like when Sun Ra ran the show, parts are still tailor-made for each Arkestra member. Plus, Allen keeps Sun Ra’s music and ideas fresh by writing new arrangements and composing new music.
